James Moody RIP

Another Jazz Legend has left our realm...
James Moody, a jazz saxophonist and flutist celebrated for his virtuosity, his versatility and his onstage ebullience, died on Thursday in San Diego. He was 85.

Mr. Moody, who began his career with the trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie shortly after World War II and maintained it well into the 21st century, developed distinctive and equally fluent styles on both tenor and alto saxophone, a relatively rare accomplishment in jazz. He also played soprano saxophone, and in the mid-1950s he became one of the first significant jazz flutists, impressing the critics if not himself.

“I’m not a flute player,” he told one interviewer. “I’m a flute holder.”

The self-effacing humor of that comment was characteristic of Mr. Moody, who took his music more seriously than he took himself. Musicians admired him for his dexterity, his unbridled imagination and his devotion to his craft, as did critics; reviewing a performance in 1980, Gary Giddins of The Village Voice praised Mr. Moody’s “unqualified directness of expression” and said his improvisations at their best were “mini-epics in which impassioned oracles, comic relief, suspense and song vie for chorus time.” But audiences were equally taken by his ability to entertain.

Defying the stereotype of the modern jazz musician as austere and humorless (and following the example of Gillespie, whom he considered his musical mentor and with whom he worked on and off for almost half a century), Mr. Moody told silly jokes, peppered his repertory with unlikely numbers like “Beer Barrel Polka” and the theme from “The Flintstones,” and often sang. His singing voice was unpolished but enthusiastic — and very distinctive, partly because he spoke and sang with a noticeable lisp, a result of having been born partly deaf.

Lefto & Simbad Presnt Worldwide Family Vol. 1

(Taken from Playground Mag)

If you want to offer a panoramic view of a certain genre—or several—in an album format, the best option is to find a credited insider (in this case, two) of the scene in question to select the content. It could’ve been Gilles Peterson, the boss, the brain behind the WorldWide label, but he’s a generous guy and so he assigned Belgium’s Lefto and Londoner Simbad to the job. Lefto and Simbad are the curators of a compilation album featuring 27 exclusive tracks oscillating between nu-soul, post-dubstep, future punk and abstract beatmaking. Honouring it’s name and overall spirit, the compilation includes artists from the U.K., Belgium, Germany, the U.S., France, Japan, Turkey, Croatia, Austria and Puerto Rico, a reflection of the sonic melting pop that defines WorldWide. The album will be released in early December (no definite date as yet) via Brownswood Records, Peterson’s label.

Upnorth Love

Always love travellin' & playin' upnorth, peeps are warmer then in UK's capital & usually ready to party haaaaaaard yooooo... Massive thanx to Bruce Q in Birmingham who showed his cookin skills, was gr8 2 c Colonel Red aka Redz in da building & catch up a bit wid him. Beane's party in Nottingham saturday nite was fantastic, Charles & i played some serious deep house shizzle but dropped many disco/boogie joints & hiphop & soul & latin & more goodies to a wonderful crowd, really felt good in that Moog joint (despite a very dodgy equipement...!). Charles missus Kaori also cooked some amazin pizzas so i guess that inspired us too thru our musical selection haha :-) ,
got 2 Manchester last nite & hooked up wid Chimpo (bad ass dubstep producer), in 3hours we layed down a nice little 134 bpm joint, might actually test it 2nite @ the Hit & Run party with Mala, Jakes & Deadboy... Should be fun !

Interview + Mixtape For Get Some UK

Guess its anotha big fun nite dis saturday in Londinum ! !!!!

http://getsomeuk.com/

GET SOME INTERVIEW SIMBAD
Who are you and what do you do?
I make music & dj, have used many aliases when released in the past but im trying to stick just to Simbad deze days…

Where are you currently based?
Mainly in London but spending 1/3 of every year in da US

When did you first get involved with music and what were you doing?
As a teenager I picked up the saxophone and started playin in bands and got heavily into jazz & funk then moved to Paris in the mid-90′s where i was putting on Jungle & DNB nites with a crew, finally moved to London when i was 19 to pursue my dreams… Had to do many shitty jobs while playing with musicians on the side but got to do loads of session work in studios, mainly house & garage. Then met another french fella called Fred McQuinn and we started our own studio and label (we were releasing under Marathon Men) , thats when i really got into the whole production & record collecting (was workin in some record shops in Soho @ that time too)…

How has the music industry changed since you first got involved? In your opinion, has the online revolution has a positive effect on what you do and the music industry?
Well back in da days we would press a 12” and live of it for months easily (as music was selling well in general) and everything was much more ‘physical’ or hand on hand, whether in da studio regarding the gear (hardware equipement like compressors, mixing desk, reverb units etc…) , record releases or carryin crates of vinyl to your gigs you know ? The whole digital revolution had some positive effects regarding freedom of expression & exposure via non-physical mediums but the whole game has changed tremendously, not only money-wise but also substantially…

Like nowadays i feel the information behind a tune or an album has been lost, no more credits attached to it too much and the sound resolution in quality has somehow diminished and we’re getting used to it !! It seems that there’s a lack of knowledge in certain areas and that kinda bothers me coz its as if technology has made our brains regress instead of progressing, we almost leave the computer to do all the thinking and thats fucked up in my humble opinion… I mean its amazing what we can do now with computers just digitally in creativity and all that, but its important to know also what we’re worth just as simple human beings and how we relate to our context in different ways… Hahaha not that i wanna sound patronizing but you know what im sayin ???

Do you find there to be a prejudice against DJ’s who use MP3′s and is software like Ableton Live bridging the gap?
Mmmh not really, i mean again its a question of taste and creativity really… You can have the best tunes and not connect with an audience, wether its coz you’re playin’ low resolution mp3′s via your laptop (so the frequency spectrum of the music is totally diminished therefore we can’t feel it through the sound-system) or coz you just dont pay attention to the vibe and just look at your screen all nite LOL but naaaaaaah you can really exploit that digital side of playing in a positive way… Its about energy and emotions & fun @ the end of the day right? (and BASS hahaha)

Personally I still prefer vinyls and cds for the physical touch and the randomness of human error opposed to a robotic flawless pattern of a software… But thats me yo !!! Loads of my fellow dj friends do really great things with Serato and Ableton and i do admire them, somehow its all about being original and being yourself… The way you do it isnt too much of an issue no more… Just spread da love yooooo :-)

What can we expect form Simbad in 2010?
Few singles about to come out on a few labels (Defected, 2nd Drop and a few others TBC) and still loads of remixes (Simbad Remixes VOL 2 due any minute on Key Rec.), gotta mix down some collabs projects too (with Cooly G, Deetron, Von D, Fred P, Karizma , Son Of Kick etc…) and more travelling i guess… The Donn T album that i produced in Philly in 2008 has just come out (she’s Questlove sister) and im still rapping up this booogie / funk project featuring some dope singers in the states for a respected label from LA… Also finishing a compilation for Brownswood Rec. with exclusive material from various peeps, quite exciting actually !

If your career in music was to end tomorrow, what would you do instead?
Good question haha ! I pretty much live day by day and find it a blessing to survive doing what i love so i dont think about it too much… Maybe i would retire to the Himalayas and become a buddhist monk LOL

Who should we be watching in 2010?
What you eat LOL !!! Musically ?? A singer from South Africa called Brian Temba, a french producer named Klimaax, the next Stereotyp album all gone juke style, some Mark Pritchard newness that is out of this world, guys like ID & Baobinga, Airhead, Midland, Trilogy or DNB cat Steve Lynx makin sick beats … The next Disiz & Grems album (the 2 best french rappers) … Labels like Night Slugs, Deep Teknologi, Record Breakin’, Numbers plus all your favourite producers and bands haha :-)

And finally, please complete the following sentence…
GET SOME… love (let’s)

Catania (Sicily)

Just got back from Catania, sweet little town on the magnificent volcanic island that is Sicily. Even tho i've been before (i recommend it, beaches with black sand & warm sea !!!!) i was really happy to play again @ Mercati Generali, a beautiful outdoor venue & restaurant open from February thoughout October, very decent sound and open crowd, not to mention the sicilian ladies alwayz up for a dance ... :-) Had 600 peeps rockin' under the moon and really felt a nice vibe there, mainly stayed on the deep house tip but couldnt resist droppin a bit of UK bass tings in da mix, some disco & some bruk ... u know how we do !!! Thanx to the girls that were throwing flowers during my set, gracie to Andrea, Arturo i Marco & special gracie mile to Diego the papa !

From Zagreb to Belgrade via Romania...

Last week was a mad one, 1st went to Zagreb to play with my croatian brother Eddy Ramich, we were closing this huge festival (INMUSIC) by the lake in a massive tent, after a really poor performance by Massive Attack (i must admit)... But luckily da youngsters stayed and we had a blaaaaaaaaaaaast !!!! Probably one of the best outdoor gigs i had dis year, really open minded crowd, smiles & fantastic energy all around. Its a very different thing to play big crowds from little clubs but i love it. Musically Eddy & i went all things house, fonky, dubstep & DNB, kinda BASSY but really proper fun ! !!!! Saw briefly Josef & Christian from Ame who were playin on the other side of the site, good laughs in da mornin@ the end of the nite :-)
Went straight back to London & caught up with my brother Karizma from Baltimore, we hung out in the studio 4 a bit as its been a while & made plans for the future, good things are coming to those who wait, as the sayin says ;-)
So yea then no sleep as i left @ 5am to the airport to catch my 8am flight to Belgrade,
nightmaaaaaaaaaaaare daaaaaaaaamn the flight was 4 hours late ... Basically ended up landing in Timisoara (Romania) in the late afternoon so a driver could pick me up to cross the boarder to Serbia... What a jooooooourney shhhhhhhhhit (im not gonna start on that one lol)... Finally arrived in Belgrade around 10-11pm, the fact that i still had no sleep probably helped me to stay zen hahaha ... Anyway, after a good meal with Schwabe & Goran (the promoters of the party) i headed up for a shower, an hour sleep & booooooom off to the club which was on a boat & on the Danube river. Really good vibes but honestly i was riiiiiinsed out, played a few hours & went 2 sleep as the sun was comin up... A rainy sunday but Nec, Niko & co took care of the brunch, absolutely gorgeous restaurant, we watched a bit of the worldcup & had even time to get some good brown bread to bring home...
Props to Eddy, Jozef & Christian, Nikola & Camille, Necone, Julia & Ivan, Goran & Schabe. WIZZ airline NEVER EVER AGAIN tho  !!!!
